The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna

I may be 11 books behind in reaching my goal for 2023, but this one may just be my top book of the year. Beginning this, I had some expectation but didn't know what it was about. The cover was cute and I was told it would be good - but was it ever. Practical magic meets House on the Cerulean Sea, okay Sangu Mandanna I will join you and yours forever and ever.
The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches follows Mika Moon, a witch that had grown up knowing that she must always keep her magic hidden and that witches only survive by keeping their heads down and not interacting with other witches. This has led Mika having a lonelier life than most and as a orphan who was raised by a rotating door of nannies, she's used to being alone.
When Mika follows an opportunity to tutor three young witches how to control their magic, she doesn't expect that the request was actually real and that three little girls were actually being raised

together regardless of the rules of witches needing to be separate. Nowhere House is home to the girls and an assortment of others that make for the perfect family - something that Mika has never had. And of course there is a very handsome (and single) grumpy librarian that would do anything to protect the three children and decides that he would like Mika to leave and basically be as far away as possible (grumpy sunshine here we come).
Mika fines her place at Nowhere House despite a few bumps in the road, and a levitation spell that went very poorly. She begins to find her people and falls in love with more then just the adorable 3 little witches that seem to be attached to her hip. But magic isn't the only thing that is dangerous and when a threat knocks at the door to Nowhere house, Mika makes the most difficult decision on whether risking everything to protect her found family is worth it all in the end.

I absolutely adored this book and couldn't get enough of every single character living in Nowhere house. Some of the family reminded me of the members of the House on the Cerulean Sea, but more witchy and less anti-christ! Mika and grumpy man were absolutely perfect and any conflict was resolved at a pace I enjoyed (I don't think I yelled at either of them throughout my entire read of the book). This five out of five star book will be granted
god-tier status and may just win my favourite book of 2023 at this rate! I cannot wait to rave about this book to literally everyone I know and I will for sure be reading anything and everything Sangu Mandanna puts out.
That's all for now
Jo
